Flat Roof

What is a Flat Roof?

A flat roof is a low-slope roof that can be built on any structure. The purpose of the flat roof is to collect and carry away water, preventing it from reaching the lower levels of your property. Flat roofs are typically seen on commercial properties such as shops, restaurants, schools, and factories due to their durability and ease of construction. However, they are also used in domestic homes for their insulation qualities.

Benefits of flat roofs

Low maintenance costs

One of the main benefits of a flat roof is that there’s no need to spend money on repairs and replacements every few years because they are highly durable.

Increase in usable outdoor space

Flat roofs give you a lot more room for activities that wouldn’t be possible with a sloped roof, such as sunbathing or playing ball games.

Safer and easier to maintain

Safely moving around on a flat roof is easier because there are no steep inclines or dangerous edges.

Quick to install

When it comes to flat roofs, they are quick to install and don’t require the assistance of a building team.

Types of flat roofs

EPDM rubber roof

EPDM Rubber Roofs have an excellent long-term track record in the field of flat roofs. This makes it one of the most commonly used materials for this purpose and also very durable. Our certified technicians can ensure your EPDM Rubber Roof will be installed to last with total peace of mind.

Modified Bitumen

Modified bitumen has good waterproofing qualities making it another popular product for installing flat roofs. As well as being watertight, modified bitumen products are available in many attractive colours that offer great flexibility concerning style options, bringing something new to flat roofs.

Single-ply roofs

A flat roof made of only one membrane, which may or may not be reinforced with another material.

TPO-rubber roofs

TPO is a newer material than EPDM rubber. It has excellent properties for flat roofs because of its low weight and high tear strength, which means it can be installed easily on any home without the need for extra support or bracing systems. It also does not require regular maintenance as some other materials do due to its elasticity, making it last longer in terms of lifespan.

Built-up felt roof

Older types of flat roofs are built up with layers made from bitumen that has been heated until they are pliable enough to spread over purlins (the metal supports placed across rafters). Because this process must be carried out hot, two methods are used:

Torch-applied: The heated bitumen is directly spread over the purlins using a blowtorch. This method can be hazardous, and it often results in fires or black smoke that has to be vented from the building structure, which could cause damage if not done correctly.

Hot asphalt spray: In this case, an automatic machine sprays molten tar onto the roof while simultaneously heating sections of metal sheeting with a propane burner so they will mould themselves around rafters when laid on top of them.
